They have the prestigious honor of being known as our JHS "Shelter Heroes." Additional funds raised by adopting a Hero pet from JHS can support the care of an additional 1–4 shelter pets.

These rare pets help curtail these costs and save the lives of others. The Joplin Humane Society is a leader in the region providing services to more than seventeen municipalities and handling more than 10000 animals each year. We are a 'contract shelter', which means we receive found animals from animal control and Good Samaritans as well as accept unwanted. Our shelter is a busy pace we handle between 600-1300 animals each month. JHS uses the additional funds generated from our Hero Pets to support and aid in the care of pets’ whose stays are longer, medical needs are greater and for those who may face emergencies. Joplin Humane Society is a high volume shelter committed to saving lives and improving the quality of lives of animals in our community. Our standard adoption fee is $90 - $120, but some pets-like the poodle puppy or Siamese kitten-that may be in higher demand are considered "HERO PETS” with adoption fees of $180. Although our first priority is to find homeless pets’ families, as a non-profit we rely heavily on funding to keep our adoption fees down and make our pets more accessible to the public even as our veterinary, medical and other costs to run our shelter continue to rise. The total value of these services coupled with the cost of daily care far exceeds the amount JHS receives in our standard $90- $105 adoption fee. On average, it costs a minimum of $30 a day to shelter, house, feed, and keep a dog healthy while in our care.Įvery pet adopted from JHS will be spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated with age appropriate vaccines, de-wormed, micro-chipped and treated for fleas and ticks. JHS does not euthanize any animal "because it has been in the shelter too long” or "because we are running out of room.” Many animals are residents of our shelter for several months before finding a home, some have waited as long as one year. The senior black lab or the older calico cat may need to wait several months for the right family to come along, while the poodle puppy of Siamese kitten may have 10 people ready to adopt the first day he or she is available. We realize, however, some animals may not get chosen as quickly.

Kennel cough is contagious to other dogs, please talk to your vet if you have any questions about kennel cough prior to adoption. Always remember that the majority of dogs at our shelter have been exposed to or may have kennel cough. We always encourage family to do some research on the breeds or mixes of breeds prior to adoption as many can have some unique characteristics that may or may not fit into their families. Behavior evaluations should be considered as a snapshot of the behavior of the dog at this point in time JHS believes all dog families need to be prepared to invest time and energy into training as well as provide common sense management of their new dog. We never recommend leaving young children unsupervised with dogs, and we cannot guarantee the behavior of dogs with children, other pets, or cats. Recommendation on suitability of placement with children by their ages is based on behavioral observations including energy level and response to body handling. Our cat test should be used as a general-purpose screening only to rule out overt aggression we always recommend caution when introducing dogs to cats in the home. Dogs are generally tested with dogs of their own size and dog meets with the resident dogs are always encouraged.

He mixes well with other dogs in a kennel, but is intensely interested in cats in the shelter environment. Cold does pull on a leash, but with basic obedience training, he should be walking like a champ in no time! He is food motivated, but does not yet know any commands. He is loose and wiggly when greeting, and comes when called for snuggles and kisses. He has a high energy level, so he would benefit from an active home with a fenced yard and plenty of space for daily exercise and play. Colt is a 1 - 2 yr old male Plotthound mix.
